Nail Care Tips Between Press-On Wears

Give Your Natural Nails the Care They Deserve
Press-on nails are gentle on your natural nails when applied and removed correctly — but the time between wears is your opportunity to keep them strong, hydrated, and healthy. Here's how to maintain your nails so they're always ready for your next set.
How Long Should You Wait Between Sets?
There's no strict rule, but giving your nails 24–48 hours to breathe between applications is a good habit. This lets any residual adhesive be fully removed, allows your nails to rehydrate, and gives you a chance to assess their condition before the next wear.
If your nails feel thin or flexible after removal, extend the break to 3–5 days and focus on the recovery steps below.
Daily Nail Care Routine Between Wears
1. Hydrate with Cuticle Oil
This is the single most impactful thing you can do. Apply cuticle oil to each nail and the surrounding skin at least once a day — ideally morning and night. Massage it in for 30 seconds to stimulate circulation and absorption. Look for oils containing jojoba, vitamin E, or almond oil.
2. Moisturise Your Hands
Dry hands = dry nails. Use a rich hand cream after every wash and before bed. Pay attention to the skin around your cuticles, which tends to dry out fastest.
3. Keep Nails Trimmed and Filed
Maintain a short, even length between wears. Longer natural nails are more prone to breaking, which can affect how well your next press-on set fits. File in one direction only to prevent splitting.
4. Buff Gently
If there's any adhesive residue left after removal, use a soft nail buffer to smooth the surface. Don't over-buff — one or two passes is enough. Over-buffing thins the nail plate.
5. Avoid Harsh Chemicals
Between sets, your nails are more exposed. Wear gloves when using cleaning products, and avoid prolonged contact with acetone (save it for removal only).
Signs Your Nails Need a Longer Break
- Nails feel thin, bendy, or papery
- White spots or discolouration on the nail plate
- Peeling or splitting at the free edge
- Sensitivity or tenderness around the nail bed
If you notice any of these, take a full week off and focus on hydration and a nail strengthener before reapplying.
Nail Strengthening Tips
- Biotin-rich diet: Eggs, nuts, and leafy greens support nail growth and strength from the inside.
- Nail hardener: Apply a nail strengthener or base coat to bare nails during your break to add a protective layer.
- Stay hydrated: Dehydration shows up in your nails before almost anywhere else.
